I have heard again and again – know your audience. What are they hoping to get out of the class/lecture/podcast/blog/challenge or whatever!
Are you CURRENTLY a messy crafter? Be honest – this doesn’t mean you are spending more time searching for your stuff than using it (although it may) because you could have one of those minds that ‘just knows where it is’.
I thought I had one of those brains. I knew I had an ‘add an 1/8 ruler’ because I just used it (ok, in a different house and a different year and I don’t mean 2011) but still. I could picture it in my minds eye but every mind and eye was incorrect and after a half hour I gave up and used the add a 1/4 ruler instead. No biggie – the project still worked out – but I still WONDER where that 1/8 is!?!
Or are you already quite organized and looking for inspiration for different options of creating the organized super studio that you already love and are quite proud of? Thread is with thread. Hand needles seperated from machine needles… But you are a sucker for the eye-candy of the creative space and that is where you attribute some of your mojo?
Or are you really like me? An eclectic mix of the uber-organized and the throw in a corner or a bin or a bag?
My thread is organized by color but not by tone and yes, this really bothers me! Or {gasp} are your different thread weights are all mixed together? My hand needles are with hand needles. My sewing machine needles are all together too. But the Microtex is mixed with Universal and can you believe there is a ‘wing’ needle in there, too? I know! Crazy stuff!
Half of my fabric is beautifully folded and findable. The other half? What other half – I can’t find it!
Some of my scraps are stuffed in a bag and some are so sorted my head hurts a little when I have to choose between ‘triangle’ and ‘half-square triangle’ when putting them away. I tend to get a little through the forest, and the trees, and right down the leaf.
My goal is to be organized enough to find the 1/8 inch ruler but no so over the top that I can’t even clean up! Not saying it is going to be easy – but I’m game if you are!
Take the poll and let me know, who is my audience??

I am a messy crafter. When I finish a project, I should be everything away – I don’t!! I work on about 5 projects at once. I can use any help you can give. Kathie L in Allentown
I want to be organized. I buy planners every year and write in them for a week. I sort my thread, but two months later its all just a jumble again. I have started organizing the scraps, but most are still just in bags. I think I’m more in the middle when it comes to tidiness, some organization, but some chaos. I do have a mind that remembers where things are, but we are moving in January to a brand-new house, and I really want my new sewing room/office to be very organized, tidy, and usable. I’m never moving again, so this time it has to be good.
would love to organize the space I occupy for sewing……and have it STAY organized. Alas – out of my grasp for some reason.
I am currently painting my entire house because the old owners had hideous taste that ran from lime green, primary blue, maroon, off white, and its current color, deep disturbing colors of brown. While I am painting, I keep thinking about my new space and how exciting it is going to organizing it and keep it look good.
I agree — I want to be organized… and for some things I can be… but I have so many projects on the go… and who really wants to clean when they could be sewing!
I am one of those weird people who can’t do anything without first cleaning up. Then as I go along I put things away. The deeper I get into a project I might leave a few things out. Now when I am done at the end of a project or day/whatever I simply walk away….no clean up. Funny huh. BUT there is no starting the next time without cleaning. I simply cannot be creative in a mess or clutter.
One of my new year resolutions is to put my house on a diet! I am trying to ‘slim down’ a drawer, cupboard or shelf a day. Some stuff goes to ebay and some to charity shops. I am fed up of not being able to find anything and also coming across stuff I had forgotten I had bought.
My sewing area is a priority, I can’t even see the sewing machine at the moment
I want to be organized and spend some time getting my sewing room all tidy and neat. Then I start to sew and at the end of the day I leave it all as it is, so that I can pick up again tomorrow. Except, tomorrow may find me tending to another project and then the chaos starts! I love to read how others manage to keep organized while finding time to sew marvelous projects. Someday, I will find the happy balance.
I have to have a fairly tidy space before I can begin working on each of the projects I have going on….so constantly putting stuff away and cleaning up I’m nearing the end of a home improvement project destined to be my new sewing space. It started out simple but then involved quite a few more steps to do it right….that’s the way it is when you are working on an oder home. This weekend finally bought paint and floor covering! I’ve turned to knitting the past few days because both the new and old space are not habitable and I can’t concentrate and sew in the chaos! My goal is to be settled and organized by month’s end. Looking at sewing rooms/studios for organizational inspiration now.
