How to make cute shelves …

So I had a little ‘dry wall stuff?’ leftover from the reno last year and some cute fabric and a couple of shelf brackets and of course, the requisite need for some new shelves…

Step 1:

wrap fabric tightly around yucky bit of ‘dry wall suff’ and use you staple gun.

Step 2: Use some gel medium to glue fabric bits (scraps, it you will) to hide those unsightly staples.

Step3: fear not – because it will dry clear.

Step 4: Hang as desired. (kind of like Quilt as desired).  I did it myself with my own power drill and wall plugs and screws and even managed to find the studs in the wall.  Only the middle shelf is a little, um, let’s say, rickety.Yes, it’s the one with a chair on it.

Come in for my close up, please.

Does isn’t look just SO cute!! Well, I thought so, so I took some pictures – and I realized what a colossal waste of space this delicious display was and ended up doing this:

Still cute(ish) but those Neutrals had to go somewhere!

  1. Such a great idea!

  2. I love this idea – and I recognize those shelf brackets !! I still haven’t used the ones I got. Thanks for this idea!

  3. I love the chairs sitting on the shelves! And, of course, the shelves — the whole thing is just wonderful.

  4. What a wonderful idea!!! I moved into my son’s old room and he has plain wooden shelves – great idea to cover with fabric. When I am tired of that fabric, I can easily change it!! Absolutely love your podcast – I have 14 year old twins and love to hear your stories – brings back lots of great memories!

  5. What a wonderful use of leftover drywall. Do you have to be careful that it doesn’t chip? My husband has all sizes of drywall in the garage. I can envision several shelves on the wall behind my sewing chair.
I noticed the little spool dolls, are they pin cushions or a craft that you had made?

  6. Great idea to use fabric on the dry wall shelves. What a “green” thing to do. Good way to use up some of that fabric stash too.

  7. Kiddo, Looks like we will both be packing around the same time. We are only moving 150 miles away but it still all has to be packed. We were on the way to the sea side to retire but he decided to work a few more years and just opened a new hospital as the administrator. I may or may not retiire from teaching depending on openings and if they are what I want to do. Special needs ages 3 to 7 is where I wish to be!
I look at my sewing room and ponder at all the thread, fibers and fabrics. Not to mention the rest.. The room looks like could I be on Horders only all is neatly arranged, ok crammed into my sewing room! , shelly beth

  8. I’m seeing a stylish studio!

  9. Great idea. Love it!

  10. Very cute and I love that space. All the colors and accessories are so pretty. I wish we would have gone to the underground village, but we didn’t have time. Maybe next time I go up.

  11. Am I missing something? I thought you were moving… so you put up new shelves? But they sure look nice! Love the patchwork look you gave them.

I finally found time to listen to the latest podcast. Thanks for reminding me of that annoying song. Will miss seeing you on Twitter, but totally understand the “too many ways to interact” thing.

I have moved too many times to count. Ok, well – I could count but I’m not taking time to do it now. Anyway, I know the beast that is packing, not to mention selling a house and in the process trying to keep it tidy with little kids. Sending good wishes your way!

  12. Definitely cute!

I made some cute shelves by covering unfinished pine boards with some nice paper. I eventually want to finish them – paint or stain probably – but until I decide what to do I wanted to protect them and have them look cute. Maybe one day i will get bored of the paper I used and I can cover them with some cute fabric. Know anyone who has some extra? ;)
